The Story Behind the Ring
I first made this for my grandson’s school party. He said it looked like a royal crown. The name “Royal Crescent Ring” just stuck after that. I still laugh at that.
It is a sweet, swirly pastry. It feels fancy but is so simple to make. This matters because anyone can create something beautiful. What is your favorite treat to bring to a party?
Making Your Dough
Start by mixing your dough. The hot water wakes up the yeast. This makes the dough puff up and get soft.
Kneading is the fun part. Push and turn the dough for five minutes. This makes it strong and stretchy. Doesn’t that smell amazing? It smells like warm bread.
The Sweet, Creamy Heart
While the dough rests, make the filling. Mix the soft cream cheese and powdered sugar. The vanilla makes it smell so good.
Spreading it on the dough is my favorite step. You want a nice, even layer. This creamy heart is what makes every bite special. This matters because the best food is made with love.
Rolling and Baking
Now, roll it up from the long side. Be gentle so the filling stays inside. Then, shape it into a ring on your baking sheet.
Let it rest for 30 minutes. It will get a little bigger. Then, into the oven it goes! Fun fact: The ring shape is a symbol of luck and unity in many cultures. Do you prefer your pastries warm from the oven or cooled down?
The Final Touches
Let the ring cool completely. This is important. If you ice it while it’s warm, the icing will just melt right off.
Then, drizzle your sweet icing over the top. Finally, add your purple, green, and yellow sprinkles. It looks so joyful. Which color sprinkle do you like to put on first?

My Royal Crescent Ring: A Sweet, Swirly Treat
Hello, my dear! Let’s bake something special today. This Royal Crescent Ring is pure magic. It is buttery, flaky, and filled with sweet cream cheese. I first made this for my grandson’s birthday. He said it looked like a crown! Doesn’t that sound fun?
We will make a soft dough and a creamy filling. The smell in your kitchen will be amazing. I still smile thinking of my family’s faces when I bring this out. It is easier than it looks, I promise. Let’s get our hands a little dusty with flour.
Ingredients
- 1 package (16 oz) hot roll mix
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup hot water (120-130°F)
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
Step 1: Grab a big bowl for your dough. Mix the hot roll mix and the little yeast packet inside. Add the sugar, hot water, egg, and soft butter. Stir it all together until it forms a shaggy ball. It will start to pull away from the bowl’s sides. See? It is already coming to life!
Step 2: Sprinkle some flour on your counter. Plop the dough right onto it. Now, knead it like you are playing with clay. Push, turn, and fold for five minutes. (A hard-learned tip: Keep a little extra flour nearby for your hands. This dough can be a bit sticky!)
Step 3: Shape the dough into a smooth ball. Then, cover it with the big, empty bowl. Let the dough take a little nap for five minutes. It needs to rest, just like we do. This makes it easier to roll out later.
Step 4: While the dough rests, make the filling. Put the soft cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla in a bowl. Stir until it is perfectly smooth and creamy. I always sneak a tiny taste. Can you guess the secret ingredient that makes it so good? Share below!
Step 5: Now, roll that rested dough into a big rectangle. Think of a long, skinny rug for a dollhouse. Sprinkle cinnamon all over the dough. Then, spread your creamy filling on top. Be gentle so you do not tear the dough.
Step 6: Time to roll! Start from the long side and roll it up tightly, like a sleeping bag. Carefully lift your long roll onto a greased baking sheet. Connect the ends to make a big oval ring. Tuck the ends under so it looks neat.
Step 7: Cover your ring with plastic and a cozy kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm spot for thirty minutes. It will get nice and puffy. Meanwhile, preheat your oven. The waiting is the hardest part, I know!
Step 8: Bake your ring until it is a beautiful golden brown. Let it cool completely on the pan. This is very important. If you ice it while it is warm, the icing will just melt right off.
Step 9: For the icing, mix the powdered sugar, melted butter, lemon juice, and vanilla. Add milk slowly until it is thick but pourable. Drizzle it all over the cool ring. Now for the best part—sprinkle on the purple, green, and yellow sugars!

Three Fun Twists to Try
This recipe is like a blank canvas. You can paint it with so many flavors. I love getting creative in the kitchen. Here are a few ideas to make it your own. Which one would you try first? Comment below!
Fruity Berry Blast: Mix a handful of chopped strawberries into the cream cheese filling. It adds a little tartness that is so refreshing.
Chocolate Chip Swirl: Sprinkle mini chocolate chips over the cinnamon before you roll it up. It turns it into a gooey, chocolatey dream.
Apple Pie Spice: Swap the cinnamon for apple pie spice. Add a layer of very finely chopped apples. It tastes just like fall.
Serving Your Masterpiece
This ring is a star all on its own. But I love making a whole event out of it. For a real treat, serve a warm slice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The way the cold ice cream melts on the warm pastry is heaven.
What should we drink with it? A hot cup of coffee with cream is my go-to. For the kids, a tall glass of cold milk is the perfect partner. It cuts the sweetness just right. Which would you choose tonight?

Keeping Your Royal Crescent Ring Fresh
This beautiful ring is best enjoyed the day you make it. But I know life gets busy. To keep it fresh, cover it tightly with plastic wrap. It will stay good on the counter for two days.
You can also freeze it for later. Wrap the whole ring, or individual slices, in foil. Then place it in a freezer bag. It will keep for up to three months. Thaw it on the counter when you are ready.
I once reheated a slice in the microwave. It got a bit soft. My tip is to warm it in a 300-degree oven for ten minutes. This brings back its flaky texture. Batch cooking matters because it gives you a sweet treat anytime.

Simple Fixes for Common Baking Hiccups
Is your dough too sticky? Do not worry. This happens to everyone. Just add a little more flour, one spoon at a time. Keep kneading until it feels smooth.
I remember when my filling was too runny. I did not let the cream cheese soften enough. Make sure your cream cheese is at room temperature. This helps you get a smooth, spreadable filling.
Is your roll cracking when you try to shape it? The dough might be too dry. A tiny bit of water on your fingers can help seal it. Fixing small issues builds your confidence in the kitchen. It also makes your final dessert taste even better.
Which of these problems have you run into before?

Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the mix and yeast packet from the hot roll mix with 2 tablespoons sugar. Add hot water, egg, and butter and stir until combined and the dough starts pulling away from the sides.
- Turn dough out onto floured surface and form into a ball with floured hands. Knead the dough for 5 minutes turning frequently. You may need to add additional flour to keep the dough from sticking.
- Reshape the dough into a ball and cover with a large bowl. Let it rest for 5 minutes.
- While it is resting make your filling by combining the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla in a bowl. Stir until smooth.
- Once the dough has rested, flour a large area and roll the dough out in a large rectangle sized about 12″X20″.
- Sprinkle the cinnamon over the dough.
- Spread the cream cheese filling evenly over the dough.
- Roll the dough up in jelly-roll fashion from the longest side, going across.
- Transfer the roll to a greased baking sheet or a baking sheet covered with parchment or a silicone baking mat. Form the roll into an oval shape and pinch the seams and ends together. Cover with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Meanwhile preheat the oven to 375°F.
- Once the dough has risen, bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely.
- Make the icing by combining 2 cups powdered sugar, melted butter, lemon juice, vanilla, and 2 tablespoons milk. Icing should be thick, but just pourable. Add more sugar to thicken it or additional milk to thin.
- Drizzle icing over the top when the king cake is cooled and sprinkle with the traditional colored sprinkles – purple, yellow, and green.
Notes
- Let the pastry cool completely before adding the icing to prevent it from melting and running off.
