My First Kitchen Mess

I first made muddy buddies with my grandson, Mateo. We were seven years old. We got chocolate powder everywhere. On our clothes, the floor, even the cat. I still laugh at that.

It was the best kitchen mess ever. Why does this matter? Because cooking is about joy, not perfection. A little mess means you are having fun. Do you have a favorite messy cooking memory? Tell me about it.

Why Two Chocolates?

This recipe uses two chocolates. Milk and white. Doesn’t that sound amazing? It makes the snack look so pretty. The dark and light pieces mixed together are like a party.

Mixing them is my favorite part. The flavors don’t fight. They dance together. This matters because food should be a happy surprise for your eyes and your mouth. Fun fact: The original muddy buddies recipe only used milk chocolate!

The Shake-Shake-Shake Part

Now for the fun. After coating the cereal, you put it in bags. You add the sugary Oreo dust. Then you shake it. Shake, shake, shake!

This is the best job for little hands. Or for shaking out your sillies. The powder makes each piece sweet and not sticky. Do you like the shaking part or the stirring part more? I can never decide.

A Treat for Sharing

This makes a big bowl. It is too much for one person. That is the point. You make it to share. I take mine to neighbors or book club.

Food tastes better with friends. This matters. A shared treat says, “I was thinking of you.” It is a little gift from your kitchen. Who will you share your first batch with?

Your Turn to Make It

Gather your cereal, chocolates, and Oreos. Crush those cookies fine. Melt your chocolate slowly so it doesn’t burn. Doesn’t that smell amazing?

Stir gently. Shake with joy. Then pour both kinds into one big bowl. The final touch? Chop an extra Oreo or two on top. It adds a nice little crunch. Now, dig in.

My Favorite Cookies and Cream Muddy Buddies

Hello, my dear! Come sit. Let’s make a treat my grandkids beg for. It’s called Muddy Buddies. We call it “puppy chow” too. Doesn’t that sound silly? I still laugh at that. Today, we’ll make a cookies and cream version. It’s crunchy, sweet, and so easy. You just need two big bowls and some zip-top bags. Trust me, it’s magic in a bag. The smell of melting chocolate is the best part. It makes the whole kitchen happy.

Step 1: Get two big bowls. Put three cups of Chex cereal in each one. Now, take your Oreos. Put them in a plastic bag. Seal it tight! Crush them with a rolling pin. It’s fun to see them turn into crumbs. (A hard-learned tip: crush them really fine. Big chunks will make the powder lumpy.) Divide the crumbs between two new bags. Add half a cup of powdered sugar to each. Give them a little shake. Set them aside for now.

Step 2: Let’s melt chocolate! Melt the milk chocolate chips first. I use a bowl over simmering water. You can use a microwave too. Just stir every 30 seconds. Be careful, it gets hot! Pour it over one bowl of cereal. Stir gently until it’s all coated. Doesn’t that look good? Now, do the same with the white chocolate. Pour it on the second bowl. Which chocolate do you think smells better? Share below!

Step 3: Here comes the messy fun. Put the milk chocolate cereal into one of your crumb bags. Put the white chocolate cereal in the other bag. Seal the bags tightly. Now shake, shake, shake! Coat all that chocolatey cereal with the sweet powder. It’s like a snowstorm in a bag. I always sing a little song while I shake.

Step 4: Dump both bags into one big, final bowl. Mix them with your hands. Feel the different textures. If you have extra Oreos, chop them up. Toss them in for a big crunch. Now, try a spoonful. You earned it! Let it cool for a few minutes. Then, share it with everyone. It never lasts long in my house.

Three Fun Ways to Mix It Up

This recipe is like a good friend. You can always change its outfit. Here are three twists I love. They make it feel new again.

  • Birthday Cake Buddy: Use rainbow sprinkles and cake-flavored Oreos. It’s a party in a bowl!
  • Peanut Butter Dream: Mix peanut butter into your melting milk chocolate. So rich and creamy.
  • Minty Fresh: Use mint Oreos. Add a tiny drop of peppermint extract to the white chocolate. So refreshing.

Serving It With Style

This snack is perfect on its own. But I like to make it special. Pour it into a big, colorful bowl for movie night. You can also fill little paper cones for a party. It looks so cute. For a real treat, scoop vanilla ice cream into a cup. Top it with a handful of these buddies. The crunch on cold ice cream is amazing.

For drinks, a cold glass of milk is the classic choice. It just belongs together. For the grown-ups, a little glass of coffee liqueur over ice is nice. The coffee and chocolate flavors dance together. Which would you choose tonight?

Keeping Your Muddy Buddies Fresh and Crunchy

Let’s talk about keeping your snack tasty. Store these in a sealed container at room temperature. They stay perfect for about a week. You can also freeze them for a month. Just use a freezer bag.

I once left a batch in a bowl overnight. The next day, they were soft. I learned my lesson about airtight lids! Batch cooking is wonderful for busy families. It means a sweet treat is always ready. This matters because it saves you time later.

You can easily double the recipe. Just use two big bowls for mixing. It is great for parties or gifts. Have you ever tried storing it this way? Share below!

Simple Fixes for Common Muddy Buddy Troubles

Sometimes the chocolate seizes up and gets clumpy. If this happens, add a tiny bit of vegetable oil. Stir gently until it becomes smooth again. I remember when my white chocolate did this. I was so worried!

Another issue is soggy cereal. Make sure your cereal is completely coated. But do not let the chocolate pool at the bottom. Shake off any extra before adding the powdered sugar. This matters for the best crunch.

Finally, the powdered sugar might not stick well. Ensure your bag is sealed tight. Shake it like you are dancing! This step builds kitchen confidence. It turns a mess into a fun success. Which of these problems have you run into before?

Description

Experience the perfect sweet and salty snack with these Cookies and Cream Muddy Buddies, featuring Chex cereal coated in milk and white chocolate and tossed with Oreo crumbs.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Divide Chex cereal into two large bowls (3 cups in each bowl).
  2. Crush Oreos into fine crumbs using a food processor or by putting them in a Ziploc bag and crushing them with a rolling pin. Divide the Oreo crumbs evenly into two separate Ziploc bags (about ½ cup in each bag). Add ½ cup of powdered sugar to each bag. Set aside.
  3. Melt the milk chocolate chips– I like to use a double boiler, but you can also melt them in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds until melted. Pour the melted chocolate into one of the bowls of Chex cereal and stir gently until the cereal is evenly coated in chocolate.
  4. Melt the white chocolate chips. Pour the melted white chocolate into the other bowl with Chex cereal and stir gently until the cereal is evenly coated in white chocolate.
  5. Add the milk chocolate Chex to one of the gallon Ziploc bags, and the add the white chocolate Chex to the other gallon Ziploc bag and shake the bags well to evenly coat the cereal with powdered sugar. Pour both bags together into one large bowl. And if you’ve got any extra Oreos in your package, chop some up and add them to the mix!

Notes

For added crunch and flavor, chop up any extra Oreos and mix them in at the end.
